My first card in the swap came out of a stamp that I carved for my journal in November as part of my entry regarding Election night (the journal entry is the image to the left). It just seemed to me during the election coverage, that one moment the election could almost have gone either way, and then the next moment, Obama was in and the world had changed. It was that moment that I tried to capture with the stamp.

I wanted to reproduce my little collage from the journal on a postcard, and I spent some time thinking about it. I think I probably could have put my hands on 25 of the postage stamps, but I don't think the post office would have been too happy about cancelled stamps on the back of a postcard so I eventually gave in and came up with a simpler design for the postcard (see below).

This my latest, and may be my last for a while, because of the pressure of other commitments. The image of the President was a real so-and-so to do. I must have been out of my mind to tackle a portrait with leis, but the idea was to emphasize the President's early exposure to Hawaiian values. I will look forward to seeing everyone else's work until I can come back in the loop.

This is my second card, which some of you are getting after my third! The quote is another one from Obama's speech on election night, but I kept it back until inaugration day, so I could add "President" instead of "President elect." I think we need to remind ourselves that everyone needs to do some of the heavy lifting in the days ahead.

I hope my card has made it to everyone by now.

The front (top half) of mine is a photoshop piece that uses a NASA image as a background and the words for "Peace, Love, Hope" in different languages in a spread that I hope evokes the American flag.

The back (lower half) is where my carved images are. The bordered text is not a carved stamp.

On Election Night, I missed the announcement that Obama got the delegates. I was working on another campaign and we were rather engrossed with watching those results come in.

I used one of my favorite Obama quotes and the 2 sizes of hands to honor the generations that came together to make this happen.

I thank everyone for their positive reaction to my first "It's A New Day" card. I got requests to post it to the Carving Consortium site, so it is in the photos section there for people who are not in this swap. On election night I was rivetted to the TV and I noted down some of the inspiring words Obama used. The image is my representation of all those hands raised in Grant Park and around the country. I chose red and black because they are strong colors reflecting the intense response of people of every background and age to the need for change and the hard work it will take to achieve it.
